last night in BsAs....

well, sort of. tomorrow i plan to take a ferry over to Colonia and Montevideo, in Uruguay, and stay the night, but i´ll likely stay one more night in BsAs before I head to Mendoza on Tuesday. I´ve seen a lot in the past 48 hours...

yesterday I did head to the cemetery in Recoleta, and found Evita´s tomb...nice and understated, although there were plenty of plaques on it. It´s a neat cemetery, and I sat down and journaled a bit before I decided I was hungry. Ate in a restaurant not really worth mentioning, and then had my first taste of Argentine gelato - which they say is supposed to be as good as Italy´s because of the Italian influence here. It was pretty good. Found some more wide avenues to walk around, went inside the Modern Art museum for about 20 minutes (i´m still not big on museums...), and then headed over to Palermo, which is the most ´bohemian´ area of town. Lots of cute boutiques, cute buildings, nice cafes....sat and read for a while. Took the Subte back to near (or so i thought) my hostel and ended up coming out right near the giant obelisk that BsAs is famous for, which was a nice surprise. Wandered around a bit (i.e. turned the wrong way), found out that Calle Libertad is the place to go if you have gold or a Rolex to sell, and found some places that serve Spanish food, but I resisted the temptation to get paella.

Last night i met up with my friend Daniel from my program at Georgetown, and he and i went to a tango show. It was definitely geared towards tourists but was fairly authentic, and the singer and dancers were amazing. What emotional, intense music....and the dancing reminds me of why more conservative religions/denominations are against dancing. :) We shared a bottle of wine as we watched the spectacle, and definitely felt like we were in Argentina.

Today I slept in and packed up a bit before wandering over to the Siga la Vaca restaurant I had mentioned before. There was a wait but it was worth it!! I had a couple different cuts of beef (picanha and bife de chorizo for those who know what i´m talking about), a bit of chicken, and some pork...plus side salads, chocolate mousse, and cafe con leche to top it off. Definitely worth the approximately $13 it cost me. And i did my best not to stuff myself too much. After lunch i took a bus down to Boca, known to be the most colorful part of the city, and where they say tango was born. It´s definitely the most touristy part of BsAs that I´ve been to, and therefore more crowded and noisy than i like, but it was fun to see so many parts of Argentine culture smushed into one spot. Then i took the metro back over to Palermo, read in a cafe for a bit, and now i´m here. might meet up with Daniel again in a little bit, and who knows what we´ll do. I have my $1 bottle of wine with me. :)

Tomorrow I check out around 11 and then will head to Uruguay after i check out the famous fair at the Plaza Dorrego near my hostel - having another country so close by is too tempting not to take advantage of. I´ll probably write another entry when I´m back in BsAs on Monday.

So far, the best part of this trip has been relaxing and reading a lot...sometimes I feel like I´m being a recluse, but then i realize that this is my trip and i can spend it however i want. :)

at some point I´ll upload some pictures - the easiest way will be to download them onto a cd and then upload them onto a computer, so i´ll wait until i have enough to make buying a cd worth it.
